THE BLOG

This weblog was created to keep track of the author’s trip to Australia from Finland. The aim of the trip was threefold, to visit family, friends and to have a much needed vacation. The timing for the trip was due to the first of these, the author’s cousin was turning 60. Hopefully, in time, this blog will grow into something the author need not be ashamed of.

THE AUTHOR

J. Hoffman, photographer, among other things. 20 years old until February next. Enjoys music, food and intelligent conversation as well as art and culture in many other forms. A great sense of humor combined with keen wit makes him a great joy to be around.

THE TRIP

The duration of this trip is just under one month, including travel times. Leaving Helsinki on the 19th of November and returning there on December 17th. The flight is to Melbourne, and most of the traveling will be in Southern Australia. Obviously many of the famous landmarks of Australia are situated quite far North and most will be left for future trips. Family is situated in Melbourne, friends in Adelaide and Tasmania. These locations are top priorities, anything more shall be considered a bonus. Any friends from Perth reading this, apologies, but you are just too far, this time.

FOURECKS

The name for this blog was rather difficult to come up with. Many ideas came to mind, bad ones. Then it hit me, Terry Pratchett, author of the famous Discworld series, had written a book called The Last Continent. This book told of a land called XXXX, also known as Terror Incognita, a land of dry wastes, kangaroos and strange speech. Not only is Terry Pratchett my favourite author, the same book was mentioned in Lonely Planet’s Australia guide as one of the guidebooks to Australia they would recommend. Hence the name was born. Fourecks.

Hey Jan! Your blog is fascinating. I am honored that you have named me, and I learned quite a deal about Australia and you! Thanks, cousin, and I hope you’ll be visiting me here in the US when I turn 60 (no discussion about how soon that may be!) Speak to you soon on the ‘net.
